Research question: What are the circumstances surrounding smart eyewear adoption?
The project.
As part of our Innovation Research Methods class, we used design methods to understand the wearable tech landscape and explore participants' thoughts, fears, and perceptions about what this new technology offers society.
The method.
We applied two research methods: interviews and a generative design game . The interview participants were experts in strategic foresight and strategy. The design game was adopted from Maatelmuki and Vaaakallio (2012) from Aalto University, Helsinki.
Findings.
Much of the data gathered from the interviews and game revolved around barriers to adoption including aesthetics, social challenges, safety/medical issues, technical issues, design and user issues, and the burgeoning AR/VR ecosystem. Policy, law, and regulations (PLR) permeated the research with the notable finding that the relationship between technology and users evolves faster than PLR could be developed to apply to such innovations.
